Ireland’s Guineas weekend continues at the Curragh on Saturday and the colts are set to be unleashed in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas. It’s shaping up to be an excellent renewal and is likely to be the highlight of the entire weekend.

Run over a mile, legendary trainer Aidan O’Brien holds the record for most number of wins in the race, having claimed the crown 10 times. Obviously he’s going to be in with a big chance once again but there’s a strong British challenge to contend with this year.

A fascinating field of nine has been declared, which gives us plenty to ponder, so our expert has picked out two selections that could achieve Classic glory with victory on Saturday.

Field Of Gold heads the market and John & Thady Gosden’s colt was a fast-finishing second in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month. His utterly dominant display in the Craven Stakes before that was certainly noteworthy and may well have finished closer last time if more positive tactics were employed.

The thoroughly unexposed Cosmic Year remains unbeaten in three starts thus far and he took the step up to Listed level in his stride when winning at Newmarket last time out. Obviously more will be needed but he’s entitled to improve again and Oisin Murphy has been booked for the ride.

Officer gets the nod from Ryan Moore as Ballydoyle’s biggest chance and his profile is similar to Cosmic Year’s. He won nicely when upped to a mile in a Listed contest over course and distance last time and the best is almost certainly yet to come.

Scorthy Champ and Expanded were useful juveniles, especially the former who won the National Stakes, but both have plenty to find after disappointing in the 2000 Guineas. Windlord finished second in a Derby trial at Sandown on seasonal debut and is probably best watched.

    Hotazhell can bring the heat

Jessica Harrington hasn’t been in great form recently, but she did end a significant drought with a winner earlier this week. Perhaps that gives reason to be confident that HOTAZHELL can get his season off the perfect start.

He beat Delacroix by a nose in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster in October and the runner-up has franked the form twice since, establishing himself as a proper Derby contender in the process.

That is almost definitely the best juvenile form on offer and provided he has trained on, there’s every chance he can come out on top. While it’s noted that he has to consider a fitness advantage to all eight of his rivals, he could be a level above them.

    Don’t dismiss Rashabar

Brian Meehan’s RASHABAR won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot at two and was narrowly denied by a couple of Aidan O’Brien-trained winners in two French Group 1 races after that.

That includes a neck second in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc weekend, which usually produces smart horses.

He began the season with a fair second behind Jonquil in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury and the winner went on to finish second in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.

Rashabar is entitled to improve for the run and his trainer seems very confident that a big run could be on the cards.
