IRISH TO THE FORE DOWN UNDER

The Irish jump jockeys team put their slow start behind when making a clean sweep in the Samuel Smith-Australia vs Ireland Steeple at Morphettville in Adelaide.

Danny Howard led home the one-two-three, riding Gilligan to victory from Jimmy Mansell on Turkey Lane with Sean McDermott third on favoutite Zidane.

In the hurdle race on the same card, Jimmy Mansell scored on Exceptional Chance with Howard picking up valuable points in third.

The Irish team now lead by 19 points to eight points and the series continues at Flemington in Melbourne.

The local stewards refused to allow Aussie rider Perry Thomas take part in the Adelaide leg of the series.

Thomas was stood down for the afternoon after being reported as 'intoxicated' at track work earlier in the day. He was not breathalysed.
