Kauto ready Owner Clive Smith hopes Kauto Star can make history on Saturday week - despite a three-week delay in staging the William Hill King George VI Chase. The Paul Nicholls-trained gelding is odds-on to win the race for an unprecedented fifth time but has been forced to wait after the original Boxing Day meeting was frozen off. "I'm looking forward to it but he has some stiff opposition. However we know he's in good shape and Paul has been able to keep him ticking over and we're very hopeful," Smith told At The Races. "I know Nicky Henderson said of Long Run they had him spot on for the original day and then you have to wait another couple of weeks and it's the same for every horse in the race. However I'm sure the trainers will have the horses right on the day. "To win five would be a fantastic record and would suit his standing in the world of National Hunt racing. It would be a true statement about him". If everything goes well at Kempton, all roads will again lead back to Cheltenham for Kauto Star. "Paul is very pleased with him, he's showing no signs of ageing and Clifford Baker who rides him every day says he's as good as ever so hopefully he can go and give another good account of himself in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup," Smith added.
