Kelso and Warwick both off

Today's meeting at Kelso, together with another jumps fixture scheduled for Warwick tomorow, are the latest victims of the prolonged cold snap.

Kelso was abandoned after a second inspection this morning at 10.30am with the track still frozen.

Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead initially inspected at 8.30am, and delayed the final decision for two hours in the hope the areas of concern would improve. However she was finally forced to concede defeat.

'We have been watching the track for any improvement and the areas that do need to improve just aren't moving,' she said.

'The Met Office are now forecasting a high of three degrees and we have got thick cloud cover which is also keeping the temperatures down. The majority of the track is raceable but there are just a few areas and there's nothing in the forecast to suggest we will be raceable in time.'

Saturday's meeting at Warwick has also been abandoned due to frost. Clerk of the course Andrew Morris called an 8.30am inspection this morning due to the frozen ground but despite milder temperatures overnight, he did not see the necessary improvement in the ground.

'We have abandoned the meeting as although the temperature did not drop as low as forecast last night, we have not seen the significant improvement we needed,' said Morris.

'The frost is extremely deep into the ground and there is little chance of it coming out this close to the meeting. We are forecast minus four tonight and plus two degrees for tomorrow but even if that forecast is wrong, we would still be struggling.'

Today's other scheduled jumps meeting at Huntingdon was already called off leaving two all-weather cards today at Lingfield and Wolverhampton.
