Ken Whelan Banned For Five Days

Ken Whelan was hit with a five-day ban at Limerick on Sunday when he failed to pull up Ballytrent after the eight-year-old had broken down in the three-mile maiden hurdle.

Whelan admitted to the Stewards that he knew the horse, who is trained by Mary Louise Hallahan, was in trouble after jumping the second last but continued on to finish fourth as he was anxious to earn some money for the owners on what he belived to be the gelding’s final run.

The Stewards decided Whelan had broken Rule 272: 'acting in a manner prejudicial to the good reputation of horseracing'; and subsequently banned him from riding from June 10-14 inclusive.
