Laytown 2026: The Irish Racing supercomputer picks the winners on the strand

Each September, Laytown hosts the only meeting in Ireland or Britain where racing takes place on a beach under the official Rules of Racing.

Racing has been staged here since 1868, and the conditions are unique: a straight section of sand, six and seven furlongs only, capped fields, experienced riders only and no headgear permitted.

Six races, one afternoon a year and no conventional course form book to lean on make this one of the hardest cards of the Irish season to call, with the market shaped as much by local knowledge as by ratings.

To cut through the noise, we have fired up our supercomputer to assess every runner declared for the 2026 Laytown meeting.

How The Supercomputer Works

The data experts at irishracing formulated a complex and industry-leading algorithm to best assess the chances of the runners at the 2026 Laytown meeting.

The algorithm runs multiple steps and takes into account different factors, before running the simulations and generating the winning probabilities of all competing horses.

To work that out, it does three things:

The Irish Racing supercomputer picks the winners on the strand. It learns what a winner looks like. The model studies the 88 horses that have won these same six races between 2007 and 2025 and builds a picture of their key traits. Every available factor was tested and only those that reliably separated winners from the rest of the field, in every era, were kept: how highly regarded a horse was in the market, its age, its sex and the weight it carried.

It compares each 2026 runner to those winners. Every declared horse is measured against those proven winning profiles and scored on how similar it is to its closest historical matches. Crucially, there is more than one way to win at Laytown; a well-treated four-year-old on the way up and a hardened veteran can both fit a winning mould. So a horse only needs to strongly resemble one type, not all of them.

It turns the scores into percentages. Those similarity scores are combined with the opening market prices, stripped of the bookmaker's margin, and converted into win probabilities that add up to 100% within each race. This step accounts for the strength of the field: a horse can be a near-perfect match for a past winner, but if it is up against several other well-treated rivals, its individual chance of winning still comes down.

Some traits matter more than others, and the model leans most heavily on how highly a horse is regarded against its rivals. The end result is a single Winning Chance Score for every runner, and the fair odds implied by it, shown in the tables below.

Supercomputer predictions for the 2026 Laytown races

The model's two strongest fancies of the day come from the less exposed end of the card.

Joseph O'Brien's Kakori is rated a 22.30 percent chance in the Pride Of Place Maiden, more than five points clear of Andrew Slattery's Therewillbeglory (16.91 percent), while Adrian McGuinness' Land Of The Giants heads the Never Beaten Claiming on 21.73 percent with Patrick Magee's Goldrush Kid (14.00 percent) the nearest thing to a threat.

McGuinness dominates this analysis with 10 of the 73 declared runners and two of the six race favourites, the second being Moyassr on 17.42 percent in the Gilna's Of Laytown Handicap, where Launch Time (13.23 percent) and Inishmot Prince (12.42 percent) are separated by less than a point.

Eamon Delany's Lohengrin, is the pick in the O'Neills.com Handicap on 17.27 percent from Gavin Cromwell's Reponse Finale (13.09 percent), and Ross O'Sullivan's Indigo Dream tops the Money Back Daily Specials QR Handicap on 16.96 percent, with Gordon Elliott (Hygge) and Henry De Bromhead (Barbapapa) both represented but unfancied by the model.

The Bet With Tote On Racing QR Handicap is the most open race of the six. Jack W Davison's Initial Blue leads on 14.67 percent, but Faoladh (10.55 percent), Edward Lynam's Collective Power (10.48 percent) and Jon Riggens (10.19 percent) are covered by less than four tenths of a point, and every runner in the field is given a live chance.

Elsewhere, the biggest gap between the model and the market belongs to Tom McCourt's Desert Of The Sea, a 3.28 percent chance available at around 66-1 when the algorithm rates a fair price closer to 30-1.
