Leading European First Season Sires 2026

As breeders we spend much of our time covered in mud, amongst other things, but as an industry we are very fashion driven.

My fiance and I run a foaling unit at home and it is easy to form an opinion of a sire when you are foaling substantial numbers. You notice themes, consistencies and traits. You take particular notice of the foals that are well made and nicely marked.

The first season on the track can make or break a stallion. It can result in a stud fee doubling or dramatically dropping. Sales companies will be reluctant to support stallions that have not produced on the track.

As breeders we want to see proof quickly that a stallion is worth our spend, we want to see results on the track so we know our stock are going to be sought after in the ring. If successful, breeders are likely to go back, send better mares and continue to support. This is a snowball effect. Giving the stallion a better chance of success.

A couple of months ago the postbox was jammed full of stallion brochures. It was a guessing game as to which stud brochure was going to arrive next and who was going to be standing the latest son of Wootton Bassett!

There is a lot of guess work in this industry but now we are going to have a look at a few of the contenders with solid chances for the Leading European First Season Sire 2026 title.

Minzaal

Minzaal heads the betting for Leading European First Season Sire 2026 at 11/10.

By Mehmas, standing at Derrinstown Stud and commanding a fee of €12,500 down from €15,000 in 2023 and 2024. He was regarded as one of the fastest horses in Europe. He had a glittering career on the track winning the Sprint Cup Stakes Gr1 and Gimcrack Stakes Gr2 at two and was placed in multiple G1 sprints including the British Champions Sprint Stakes and Prix Maurice de Gheest.

His stock were strongly supported at the foal and yearling sales with his yearlings averaging €86,000. 19 of his yearlings sold for six figures, including one at 550,000gns.

When we think of the Mehmas sire line, we think fast, early 2 year olds.

Breeders have consistently reported their Minzaal foals to be strong, of good bone, compact and correct.

Blackbeard

Blackbeard sits a close second in the betting at 6/4. The son of No Nay Never stands at Castlehyde Stud for a fee of €17,500. Down from €25,000 in 2023 and €20,000 in 2024.

Blackbeard was one of the toughest juvenile sprinters in modern European racing. In 2022 he ran eight times between April and October, winning six races including two Gr1’s. He won the Prix Morny Gr1, the Middle Park Stakes Gr1, the Railway Stakes Gr2, the Prix Robert Papin Gr2 and the Marble Hill Stakes Gr3.

Blackbeard carries strong speed genetics. No Nay Never being a top speed source and the Scat Daddy line making him commercial.

His first yearlings have sold very well, achieving an average of 500,000gns. He covered nearly 200 mares in his first season so there is plenty to look forward to.

Persian Force

Persian Force is another stallion by Mehmas, this time brought to you by the Stud that gave us Mehmas himself and Starman. He stands at Tally-Ho Stud for €10,000. He was announced in 2023 with a fee of €10,000, which then dropped to €8,000 for 2024 and 2025.

He was a very genuine and tough racehorse with great consistency. He won the Richmond Stakes Gr2 and the July Stakes Gr2. He was 2nd in the Prix Morny Gr1, 2nd in the Phoenix Stakes Gr1 and 3rd in the Middle Park Stakes Gr1.

Persian Force is 9/2 in the betting and I have no doubt that he will have plenty hitting the track.

Perfect Power

Perfect Power is a son of Ardad and stands at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of €7,500. He started his stud career commanding a fee of £15,000 in 2023, it then dropped to £10,000 in 2024 and dropped again in 2025 to £7,500.

He was a particularly good two year old sprinter, winning the Norfolk Stakes Gr2, the Prix Mony Gr1 and the Middleham Park Gr1. As a three year old he was tried in the Guineas but failed to stay the distance and finished mid division. Connections then reverted back to sprinting and he won the Commonwealth Cup Gr1.

There was strong buyer demand from both trainers and pinhookers for his stock at the sales. His yearlings averaged around £82,000 at Doncaster.

Perfect Power sits further down in the betting for leading first season sire at 66/1 but he is definitely worth a mention.

Baaeed

Baaeed is the epitome of class. By Sea The Stars and standing at Beech House Stud for a fee of £55,000. He was launched in 2023 for £80,000, in 2025 his fee dropped to £65,000.

Baaeed won six group 1’s including the QE2, the Lockinge, the Sussex Stakes and the Juddemonte International. He was also crowned World Champion Turf Horse.

Baaeed covered an elite first book of mares including multiple Group 1 winners. His yearlings sold up to €800,000 which showed huge confidence from buyers.

He sits at 66/1 in the betting most likely because we are expecting classy middle distance types but with a strong possibility of some late two year olds.
