Lover Heads Cesarewitch Possibles

True Lover, trained by Seamus Mullins, heads the weights on 9st 10lb for the totesport Cesarewitch at Newmarket following the confirmation stage.

All the leading fancies were among a total of 46 horses left in the two-and-a-quarter-mile heritage handicap, for which the maximum field is 36.

Ante-post favourite is Afrad, trained by Nicky Henderson, while other major contenders include Sir Mark Prescott´s Elusive Dream, the Jamie Poulton-trained Land `n Stars, Hughie Morrison´s Odiham and the Northumberland Plate and Ebor winner Sergeant Cecil from Rod Millman´s stable.

Poulton is expecting a big run from last year´s sixth Land `n Stars, who was a 50-1 stunner in the Listed Fenwolf Stakes over two miles on this course last month.

'It was a good, solid galloping performance. I knew he would cope with the conditions. They were in his favour and he nearly always runs well at Newmarket, I am looking forward to going back there on Saturday,' the Lewes trainer told At The Races.

'He got sandwiched just at the wrong time about two furlongs down in the Cesarewitch last year. It definitely cost us third or fourth place.

'I´m happier this year. He´s a bigger, stronger horse and I´ve had this race in mind for a long time. We didn´t wind him up too much during the summer.

'We´ve had a really nice preparation and touch wood nothing will go wrong. He had a lovely splash in the sea last week and he seems in good form with himself.

'Good ground would be ideal for him. He can cope with the soft. It was definitely on the slower side at Newmarket when he was a close finishing second to Baddam in July.

'He did move very nicely in the Fenwolf Stakes on that quicker good ground.

'We might not send him to the front as quickly as we did in the Fenwolf simply because he´s gone up in the weights and there might be something off 8st that comes to do you, so we might just hold him up a bit more.'
