Magic Of Light easily completes Listed Mares Chase hat-trick Magic Light landed the Pertemps Network Mares Chase for the third successive year at Newbury when easily justifying odds of 1/2 in the hands of Robbie Power. The Jessica Harrington-trained mare, runner-up to Tiger Roll in the 2019 Randox Health Grand National, made all the running in this 2m7f Listed event and cruised clear of her two rivals on the run-in. The nine-year-old had a facile eight lengths to spare over Sensulano, with Carrolls Milan a further length and a half back in third. Power said on Racing TV, “That was fantastic and she feels as good now as she did when winning it for the first time. She travelled super and jumped super. She didn’t put a foot wrong the whole way around. “I gave her a breather after jumping the last one down the back straight. She just loves jumping and is a joy to ride. “The main target again is the Grand National at Aintree in April. There is a nice plan for her that we have used for the last couple of years and she will come back to Ascot at the end of January. “It’s ideal if you can get a mare to Aintree with loads of confidence under her belt. She really took to the fences around Aintree which I didn’t think she would. She’s a brave mare and proved me wrong in Aintree. “When Jett was coming over for the Becher Chase a few weeks ago, Magic Of Light gave him a lead over the fences and she was straight down over them and as keen as ever. “She is a good bit higher in the handicap than she was the last time at Aintree. She needs to improve again to improve on that second but I still think she is improving.” Paddy Power and Betfair both cut Magic Of Light into 25/1 (from 40/1) to go one better in the National next April.
