Makybe Diva wins Melbourne Cup Makybe Diva won today´s 143rd running of the Melbourne Cup to become only the 14th mare to win Australia´s richest and most famous horse race. Brilliantly ridden by Glenn Boss, the five-year-old sprinted clear of the field in the final 200 metres to beat She´s Archie by a length and a quarter. English raider Jardines Lookout grabbed third in a photo finish with two other horses. Mamool, owned by Godolphin and ridden by Frankie Dettori, weakened badly and was last of the 23 starters, the first favourite to finish at the tail of the field in 69 years. Godolphin´s second-string entry, Millstreet, led for most of the race but also faded on the run to the line to finish 21st as none of the five northern-hemisphere entrants figured in the placings. Makybe Diva sat mid-field most of the race before bursting through the pack to kick clear and give Boss and trainer David Hall their first win in the race. Irish hope Holy Orders was never in contention and faded to finish 17th of 23.
