Champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle has an exciting ride to look forward to at Epsom after James J Braddock threw his hat into the Derby picture when coming out best in a thrilling finish to the Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown last week.

The young jockey has finished 6th and 3rd in the Derby on his two previous rides in the Epsom showpiece aboard Tennessee Stud and Dancing Gemini.

Niall Tierney caught up with the young jockey last week and got his thoughts on the Derby; his experience abroad and one to follow for the rest of the season.

James J Braddock

I thought he did really well from his position off the turn, we didn’t go crazy the first half and we quickened up good from the three.

I was on the back foot being behind Pierre Bonnard and Endorsement and I thought he did really well to get them.

The last 100 yards was very strong and he’ll only be better when he goes up in trip.

It was nice to see him improve from his first run and I think he’s a horse that’s only going to get better.

On riding in Australia and Hong Kong

That’s what every jockey wants to be doing.

It gets quiet here in the winter time so it’s good to travel, learn as much as I can around the world and ride at the biggest events.

I can keep learning and picking things up as I go along.

Going to Australia was a huge help, I was very well looked after by trainer Ciaron Maher.

I was in Hong Kong last winter which was a huge eye opener and I learned so much and met some great people and will definitely look forward to going back again.

One to follow for the season - runs in the 6.42 on Tuesday at Cork

Al Haarith is a nice horse, he had a few runs last year. We haven’t seen the best of him yet.
