Mania hoping to leave hospital today Grand National-winning rider Ryan Mania is still hoping to leave hospital today after being injured in a fall at Hexham on Sunday. Mania, 23, was taken by air ambulance to hospital in Newcastle on his return to action after winning the National on the Sue Smith-trained Auroras Encore at Aintree on Saturday. The Scotsman was linking up once again with Bingley-based Smith in the St John Lee Handicap Hurdle. However, his mount Stagecoach Jasper came down early on the final circuit. Mania was conscious following the fall and was put into the air ambulance on a spinal board before being taken to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary for assessment. He later tweeted that he was "grand" and was awaiting a further MRI scan. Although he has yet to have that examination, his mother Lesley told Racing UK: "He's been in touch and I'm more than happy with what I have heard. He had a scan yesterday but more for precaution they want to do another one. "I watched it on the telly. He's had a lot of falls but he caught a horse behind him. "You're helpless, you can't do anything unless you hear something, but I'm pleased with how it seems to be going. He's a wee bit sore and fed up, but he seems all right." Reopens Jeffrey later confirmed Mania was still in hospital awaiting his scan. He tweeted: "News regarding Grand National winning jockey Ryan Mania, still awaiting MRI scan,will update when more news regarding Ryan."
