David Marnane feels the quick ground at Royal Ascot went against his two runners at the meeting.

Tokenomics failed to make much impression in the Royal Hunt Cup on Wednesday while it was a similar story for juvenile Gavoo in the Coventry Stakes on Tuesday.

Four-time winner Tokenomics could bid to bounce back in the Nasrullah Handicap at Leopardstown next month.

“We were hoping with our two runners and while you can hope as much as you like in the Royal Hunt Cup but Tokenomics didn’t run his race,” said Marnane.

“I felt the ground had become pretty tight for him and being a big horse, that ground issue was the only unknown we had.

“He has won on good-to-firm ground but that was pretty saucy, so I’ll put his run down to that.

“We still think an awful lot of him so I’m sure he’ll bounce back and could run in the Nasrullah or something like that.

“I felt it was too much of an ask for Gavoo, who was drawn on the wing and to me ran a bit green.

“He didn’t want the ground as saucy as that either but he is okay and is a nice horse, so we’ll get there.”
