Declan McDonogh was the standout name at Dundalk today as the former champion jockey took advantage of a ‘drop in class’, when completing a double on Winemaker (10/1) in the Group Deals Available At Dundalk Handicap.

Races for today’s meeting were either confined to apprentices or riders who hadn’t ridden 20 winners from March 16 to November 2 2025, with McDonogh (44) taking advantage of his quiet spell last summer, when he steered 18 winners.

Having earlier partnered Another Day Done to score at 10/1, the 2006-champion doubled up on Winemaker, who made a successful debut for his new trainer Declan McGuigan, having been claimed for just €5,000 at today’s course in November.

Racing behind the leaders, Winemaker finished well to score by a length from Mount Ruapehu .

McGuigan reported "my son Kyle claimed him the last day so it was her stable debut, although it was about time we did something right! That's our third winner and we have in-and-around seven or eight horses in training. We are in Donegal and come here often as this is not too far away for us.”

He added “to have a jockey of Declan’s quality today is amazing and you have all that man’s experience. He's a good man and a good jockey.”

Winning owner Kyle Browne McGuigan added "I saw him for a long time and he is fairly consistent up here. He looked to be well handicapped and had a good comeback run off a break, so we thought we would take a chance. It is good that it worked out."
