All-Ireland winning Tyrone player Conor McKenna has decided to return to Australia and resume his AFL career with Essendon, but before he departs he will have a big day to look forward to as Ampeson, trained by his father Patrick, is set to run in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF 'Bold Lad' Sprint Handicap at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend.

McKenna, who rides out regularly, thinks Ampeson could run a big race.

"He's probably the most expensive horse we have bought in a while. For our yard to have a runner there is unbelievable. If he gets in, he will definitely go for the six furlongs at the Curragh," he said.

"It will be some buzz down there and I'm sure dad will be over the moon.

"The last day in Dundalk he just missed the break a bit. He had lengths to make up coming into the turn and he flew home and got sixth. It was probably a better run than what people look at when they see sixth.

"If he gets into the race, he has every opportunity off a low weight to go well."

Ampeson is rated 80 and has four victories in his locker.
