Murtagh lands Geoffrey Freer on Sans Frontieres

Sans Frontieres (3-1) continued his renaissance by following up his Newmarket success in the CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes.

The Jeremy Noseda-trained colt was always travelling well in the hands of Johnny Murtagh as Kite Wood made the running before taking it up two furlongs out.

He was challenged by Laaheb and then veered towards his rival on the right, slightly interfering with Saptapadi as well.

Once Murtagh got his mount back on an even keel, Sans Frontieres forged clear to beat Laaheb by two and a quarter lengths with Saptapadi third.

The Irish St Leger at the Curragh next month looks a likely target for the four-year-old, who is owned by Sir Robert Ogden.

"To be honest I was very worried about the ground but I chatted to Sir Robert and we decided to go for it," said Noseda.

"I was very worried he wouldn't go on it but we had to find out today because we've had the Irish St Leger on our minds.

"There's a good chance it will be soft there so it will be the Irish St Leger next and hopefully after that, we can have a tilt at the Melbourne Cup."

Kite Wood faded tamely away after being headed suggesting something may be amiss with Godolphin's colt, who took this prize last year.

"He was beaten a long way out so something was definitely wrong there," said his jockey Frankie Dettori.
