Navan hoping to beat freeze

With temperatures forecast to hit as low as minus five over the weekend Navan are optimistic that they will beat the freeze on Sunday.

The two races over fences have been moved to the back of the card to give the chase track more time to recover should frost hit the track on Saturday night.

“The ground is soft at the moment. We had a slight bit of frost last night and a heavy frost the night before,” said groundsman Vincent Eivers.

“The forecast is for frost if it is clear but it's hit and miss and it's very cloudy here at the moment. It's to remain dry and we are very optimistic.

“The hurdle track has fresher ground and it would get over frost quicker but the chase track is fairly worn as it has been used all winter.

“The frost takes longer to come out of worn ground so as a precautionary measure we've moved the chases to the end of the card to give them a couple more hours to recover if the frost does come.”
