No luck for Irish fillies at Goodwood Sir Henry Cecil's Wild Coco defied an absence of nigh on a year to run out an impressive winner of the iShares Fillies' Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday. The daughter of Shirocco proved a disappointing favourite in this Group Three 12 months ago and hadn't been seen since again failing to run up to her best in her only subsequent start last August. However, she rewarded the patience of her connections when returning to her best under Tom Queally to run out a two and three quarter length winner of the mile six race better known as the Lillie Langtry Stakes. A big run had been expected from Hawaafez and Paul Hanagan set out to make this a searching test aboard Marcus Tregoning's filly but her exertions told as she had no more to offer in the closing stages as the petrol gauge swung to empty. The challengers had been stacking up behind as the field turned into the straight with Bolivia the first to have a crack at the leader but as the field approached the two pole the market principals came to the fore. Estimate, Midnight Soprano and the eventual winner were all bearing down on Hanagan in the centre of the course but it was Cecil's filly who showed the best turn of foot to sprint clear with the Queen's Vase winner Estimate caught in the shadow of the post for second by the French raider Jehannedarc who flew home once the race was over.
