Wexford man Donagh O'Connor rode the second black type winner of his career when showing great initiative aboard the Ross O'Sullivan trained Chally Chute to claim the Listed Lenabane Stakes at Roscommon.

O'Connor, who had previously enjoyed listed success aboard the Ger Lyons trained Inverleigh in the Committed Stakes at Navan, came widest of all up the straight, racing away from the main group of runners.

Leading over a furlong out, the 125/1 outsider belied those odds in staying on strongly inside the final furlong to win by one-and-a-half lengths.

Jamie Powell, who had initially been jocked up on Chally Chute missed the ride having been stood down.

“That’s absolutely brilliant. I’m delighted for Julie and Dominic,” said Ross O’Sullivan.

“He obviously came to us from Mick (Halford). He’s been entered a couple of times for different races but he loves a dig in the ground and we were waiting for ages.

“Obviously it was costing money putting him into premier handicaps. He was in the Curragh at the weekend but again couldn’t run.

“The rain came last night and that suited us great.

“I’m delighted for Donagh. Unfortunately for Jamie he’s out but Donagh is in to us twice a week and it’s deadly. He got a lovely run up the outside.

“I got a great kick out of it. I’m delighted for Julie and Dominic, who own him, as they bred him and he’s like a member of the family.

“It’s magic, a great story, as they love the horse. It was nice to get him, a well rated horse like that.

“We’ll see where we go now. The idea was to have a run today and maybe go back to Galway but we’ll see now.

“I don’t think I’ve had one win at that price before, 125/1, and I think Julie backed it.”
