O'Grady delighted with Osana

Edward O'Grady was delighted to see Osana make a winning debut over fences when having his first start for the yard at Navan last Sunday.

Good enough to be a runner-up in the Champion Hurdle when trained by David Pipe, the seven-year-old joined O'Grady in the summer.

Having jumped adequately all the way, he responded well to Andrew McNamara's urgings after the last to beat Roberto Goldback by three-quarters of a length.

"I thought it was pretty comprehensive. We hadn't done a lot of work with him, we'd just done a nice bit of schooling with him," said O'Grady.

"I felt if he was the horse of the calibre that you read in the form book, he'd had enough work to win and that was probably the way it turned out.

"I've only really set about schooling, not about training him yet so I was very pleased. It's always nice to see a horse have his first run over fences and win comprehensively.

"He seemed to idle between the last two but he responded quite well to encouragement so it was pretty gratifying.

"I haven't a clue what his best trip might be - watch this space."

O'Grady suffered a disappointment on the same card, however, when stable star Catch Me fell when holding every chance at the final fence.

"He's absolutely perfect now," he told At The Races.

"It was disappointing, I think he'd have won quite snugly.

"I just watched the race again this morning with Andrew and I think he was a bit unlucky, it was just one of those things so we'll put it behind us and move forward."
