Oliver puzzled by poor Cornerstone showing Andrew Oliver is at a loss to explain First Cornerstone's disappointing display in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly last weekend. The son of Hurricane Run showed some high-class form as a juvenile and ran a hugely promising race when fifth on his return to action in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh. Turned out just a week later for the French Derby, the three-year-old trailed home a well beaten 15th of 19 runners in the hands of Frankie Dettori and Oliver is not sure it was solely down to the race coming too soon after his comeback run. Oliver said: "The horse arrived home on Tuesday morning, obviously a bit tired after the travelling, but other than that he seems fine, so we're a bit puzzled. "The question mark hanging over him going into the race was whether it would come too soon after the Irish Guineas, but we didn't think it would and he travelled over to France very well indeed. "We took him out for a stretch on the track on the morning of the race and seemed in great form, so we were expecting a good run. "For whatever reason, the race didn't pan out as we expected and things didn't happen for him on the day, so it was very disappointing. "In the Irish Guineas he jumped and travelled before blowing up two furlongs out, and I'm not sure why he didn't travel like that at Chantilly. "We know the horse has speed, so it's a bit of a puzzle and we have more questions than answers. "We'll see how he is over the next week or so. The owners have told us to take our time, so we'll go back to the drawing board and start again."
