Owner-breeder Leigh passes away

Gerald Leigh, the owner and breeder of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Gossamer, as well as a host of other equine stars, has died today following a long battle with cancer.

Since last year, Leigh has donated all winnings from his horses to the charity CancerBACUP.

He began breeding 30 years ago from Cayton Park Stud and had been at his present base at the 600-acre Eydon Hall Farm Stud, Eydon, Northamptonshire, for the past 20 years.

Leigh was named Flat breeder of the year by the Thoroughbred Breeders` Association at its 2001 awards thanks to the exploits of Gossamer and Act One.
