Peadar Matthews dies aged 85 Classic winning jockey Peadar Matthews has passed away aged 85. Matthews, a father of IHRB Head of Stewarding Peter Matthews, was the winner of two Irish Classics in the 1960s, landing the Irish St Leger on the Paddy Prendergast trained Arctic Vale before winning the 2,000 Guineas on Linacre for the same trainer. Matthews trained successfully following his riding career and among his winners was smart mare Fishin Joella, who became the dam of Royal Ascot winner Jennies Jewel. Matthews passed away at Beech Park Nursing Home in Co Kildare and was the husband of the late Maura, and father of sons Peter and Derek, daughters Marie, Paula, Caroline, Suzanne and Christine.
