Punters set to bet via TV

Interactive betting on British raciong through digital television sets is due to become available from next month on both the Attheraces channel and on Channel 4.

Channel 4 director of strategy David Brook said: 'We are now very close to the time where digital viewers will be able to bet by pressing the `red button` on their remote controls.

'We said that this was a time for revolution in the broadcast of racing and we meant it. About 50 per cent of British homes have access to digital technology and this is a very exciting and important development.

'ITC guidelines means that there must be two `clicks` between the screen and being able to place a bet and we will be careful not to infringe anything - there can`t be a big banner at the bottom of the screen saying `bet now` as they go into the stalls.

'At first we will be encouraging Tote pool betting through Attheraces as the profits go back into racing and that is something we would like to support.'
