A colt from Rip Van Winkle's first crop made 200,000 Guineas at Tattersalls yesterday to top the December Yearling Sale.

Patrick Cooper of BBA Ireland landed the successful bid with Japanese buyer Ryoichi Ohtsuka the underbidder.

Bred by Richard Moses in Wales, the colt is out of Rainbow Quest mare Aurelia.

A Rip Van Winkle colt was also the leading light at the Goffs November Sale as he realised 420,000 guineas.

Rip Van Winkle won the Group 3 Tyros Stakes as a juvenile in 2008 when trained by Aidan O'Brien.

He was fourth in the following year's 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Derby and was a length runner-up to Sea The Stars in the Coral-eclipse before crowning off his three-year-old career with successes in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

As a four-year-old he won the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York.
