Sea Moon impresses in Great Voltigeur

Sir Michael Stoute's Sea Moon (11-2) turned the sportingbet.com Great Voltigeur Stakes at York into a procession.

Richard Hughes gave the winner an ice-cool ride at the rear of the field before moving into contention with three furlongs to run.

As his rivals all started to struggle Hughes eased his mount to the front before quickening clear in very impressive fashion.

Second home was Roger Charlton's Al Khazeem (16-1), whilst hot-favourite Seville (5-6 fav) could only manage third.

Hughes said: "He's a big, raw horse, but is an exceptional mover.

"Normally when they move that good they don't have a change of gear, but this fellow moves exceptionally well and he picked up very good, too.

"Five furlongs out he picked up a lot and he was always going ever so easily."

Stoute added: "It was highly impressive. "He's a horse we've always loved, but he had a few little niggles in the springtime.

"We were hopeful, but I didn't expect him to win like that.

"He's a lovely big horse with a good mind, and he's progressed so well since he ran here at York in June.

"On that performance, he's got a great chance in the Leger, for sure."

Stoute continued: "Ryan (Moore) gave Richard his instructions, and told him to look after the horse.

"I think he (Hughes) taught the horse a bit because he travelled through the race so well and got there in plenty of time - too early, if anything.

"He ran two promising races last year and he's only had two races this year. We've always had a good opinion of him and he hasn't had a tough race.

"That was a vast improvement on what he's done publicly.

"We'd like Hughes to ride him again in the St Leger but I believe he has a connection with Highclere (owners of Leger rival Census).

"I'm sure we'll be able to find another jockey."

Roger Charlton, trainer of runner-up Al Kazeem, said: "The winner is obviously very decent and we wouldn't want to take him on again.

"I'm really pleased with the horse as he hasn't run since mid-May and we would prefer faster ground.

"We might run him in something like the Arc trial trial at Newbury, but I'm not really sure at the moment."
