Sheridan boots home first winner on Hell Left Loose It was a red-letter day for 10lb claimer Mel Sheridan who partnered his first winner aboard Hell Left Loose (11/2) in Division 1 of the Racing Club Membership Handicap. It was an all-the-way success for Hell Left Loose who proved much too strong for his rivals at the business end. Once Sheridan kicked him for home racing to the final furlong, he powered clear to put his rivals to the sword by seven lengths for Denis Hogan and Premier Racing Club. Hieloray (17/2) finished second and was a length and a-quarter in front of Kitty Bear at 9/1. Mel Sheridan (17) said: “When I crossed the line it was an amazing feeling. “The plan was to sit fourth or fifth, but I ended up making the running. He loved that ground and quickened when I wanted him to. “He was on the bridle the whole way and two furlongs out he quickened for me. I love the horse as well. I had my first ride on him. “I dropped out in third year — I couldn’t do school at all. Ever since then I have been trying to be a jockey, and I love the job. “I was in RACE for about six weeks and was as green as grass and then I went into Denis’ and he taught me from the ground up. I can’t thank all the lads in the yard enough. “It’s also good to have Joey as well for advice.” Sheridan is a younger brother of jockey Joey Sheridan. Additional reporting by Alan Magee
