Sona & Sang catch the eye at Huntingdon

The Irish-bred Sang Bleu made an encouraging reappearance from a break in a Belharbour point-to-point on Sunday but today it is the turn of the more high-profile French-bred Sang Bleu to strut his stuff at Huntingdon.

This fellow was seriously well-touted prior to his British debut at Chepstow over Christmas. However that day he had no answer whatsoever to Me Voici on heavy ground, eventually going down by ten lengths. Interestingly Me Voici is by Saint Des Saints - the sire of Irish winners Quel Esprit and Quito De La Roque (of course both of those go well on very deep ground too).

Sang Bleu has reportedly come on a lot from his Chepstow effort and again he has Tony McCoy in the saddle. This is a very interesting heat in which Paul Nicholls' runner faces just five rivals. He'll need to be winning to retain his prominent place in the Triumph Hurdle ante-post market, where Bothy is a top-priced 50/1 shot, Classically is a top-priced 100/1 and Nicky Nutjob is a best-quoted 200/1. It could be Plumpton winner, Stars Du Granits that will emerge as the chief threat to Sang Bleu.

Meanwhile Sona Sasta, winner of a Sligo point-to-point where he beat subsequent track winners, Tofino Bay and Collon Allstar, tries to follow-up a Ffos Las success from a fortnight ago in the opening freebets.co.uk Handicap Hurdle. He represents the in-form David Pipe yard and he will have Tom Scudamore in the saddle.

A son of Sonus, this seven-year-old beat the well-backed J P McManus runner, Hopeful Start, last time, and got ten pounds for his troubles. Said to be better going this way around (right-handed), Sona Sasta must have a good chance of going in again with I've Been Framed (a Lingstown point-to-point winner for Tracey Gilmore), Alteranthela (won at Maralin for Philip Dempsey) and Opus Cafe (a Lismore winner in his days with Pat Doyle) among some interesting opponents.
