Jamie Spencer, who is set to retire from race riding at the end of the year, had no luck at Lingfield on his first attempt under jumps rules for six seasons.

The former champion Flat jockey was last of four finishers on the Jim Best-trained Lyssio in the Lingfield Park "Flat Jockeys" Handicap Hurdle, won by 16-1 shot The Sneezer.

Spencer, who is taking up a non-riding role with Qatar Racing in the new year, was third on Dashing Star in the Betfred November Handicap at Doncaster on Saturday on his last ride on turf in Britain.

The 34-year-old, who has a Cheltenham Festival victory on his CV with Pizarro in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper in 2002, enjoyed his fleeting return over jumps.

He said: "It was good, though I didn't like it when Martin (Lane, rider of Stag Hill) fell.

"It's bottomless out there. I've got a high percentage of falls to rides over jumps so it was nice to get round."

When asked if retirement was imminent, Spencer said: "I've got rides in Hong Kong and I'm in Barbados next week."
