St Stephen's day racing in the UK under threat

A host of St Stephen's day meetings are under threat because of the poor weather conditions across the UK.

Towcester has already been called off, while the meetings at Sedgefield, Wetherby, Market Rasen and Huntingdon face inspections on Thursday.

Market Rasen is blanketed by snow, with overnight temperatures falling well below freezing.

"It's looking a bit bleak at the moment," said Clerk of the course Nick Patton.

Ice and snow have caused havoc over the past few days, while more heavy snow in northern England and the East Midlands has been forecast.

"The snow on the trees and hedgerows is usually the first to go but there's no sign of any thaw," added Patton.

Thursday's inspection at Market Rasen will take place at 2pm.

There are no problems anticipated ahead of the King George meeting at Kempton, with the frost covers seemingly having protected the course.

Officials at Wincanton are also optimistic and clerk of the course Barry Johnson currently has no plans to stage an inspection, while there are no problems anticipated at the only all-weather meet at Wolverhampton.
