Stoute one two at Goodwood

It was like the old days in the Group Three Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood as Thirkryaat spearheaded a Sir Michael Stoute 1-2.

Paul Hanagan looked to be struggling for room for much of the home straight as early pacesetter Emotionless was overhauled by Light Up Our World just after the two-furlong pole.

Ryan Moore on Forge, down the outside of the field, looked best-positioned as his mount swept to throw down a challenge. But suddenly Paul Hanagan found the gap he needed and Thikryaat, the 9/4 favourite, burst through to confirm Jersey Stakes placings, the pair having finished second and third respectively at Royal Ascot.

At the winning post, Thikriyaat got the better of the argument by half a length.

Hanagan said: "He does just enough, really. I had to really sit and suffer on him, but he's got such a lovely temperament - he loves to please.

"In time, you'll see him step up in trip. Without doubt he'll get further."

Stoute said of the winner: "He's very tough and honest and consistent - he's a very admirable horse "I think he'll get a bit further than that (a mile)."

Of Forge, the Newmarket handler added: "He's a nice horse in the making."
