Surrounding bows out at Dundalk A wonderful servant, time was called on the racing career of Surrounding after she finished seventh to Juncture in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cooley Stakes at Dundalk on Friday evening. Successful in this Listed contest in 2018 and again in 2019, the Mick Halford-trained bay won 11 in times in total from 47 starts. A career highlight came in the Group 3 Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse in July of 2019, with her final victory in the Corrib Stakes at the Galway Festival in August, her second win in the race. That recent success was a particularly poignant occasion for her connections, with her owner/breeder Peter Newell passing away just hours prior to the win. "She's been amazing and we've had a great journey with her," said Halford. "She's every trainer and breeder's dream really, to be so consistent and so sound and to have the enthusiasm right up to the end. "I'm delighted for the Newells and I'm sure Peter will be looking down on us. We have great memories and Galway was very special given the time it was. "From the very beginning she has given us a lot of fun. We had a great time with her in Dubai. "It was emotional for the family tonight obviously and thank-God she has retired in one piece. Hopefully we can get another one like her some time. "She'll be covered now but I don't think they have any ideas with what yet. They have a stable and everything ready for her and are looking forward to getting her home." Additional reporting by Gary Carson
