The New One makes winning return

Nigel Twiston-Davies' stable star The New One ran out a workmanlike winner at Kempton.

Making his first appearance since finishing fifth behind Faugheen in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, the seven-year-old was prohibitively priced at 2-11 to claim this Listed hurdle prize for the third successive season.

Conceding weight to each of his four rivals, The New One travelled with plenty of zest for much of the two-mile journey and was largely assured in the jumping department, albeit showing a tendency to edge right on occasions.

He moved up to challenge the pacesetting Rayvin Black for the lead early in the straight, but Sam Twiston-Davies began to get to work after he hit the front jumping the second flight from the finish.

Just for a moment it looked as though smart mare Stephanie Frances could make a real race of it, but The New One produced a good leap at the last and was driven out to score decisively in the end by two lengths, winning the Listed event for the third time.

Twiston-Davies said: "He has not run for a long time and he's bigger than he has been at this time of the season.

"The race was run slowly and it was a bit of a dawdle, but he was very quick over the last two, which was lovely to see and I'm chuffed to bits.

"He'll go to Haydock next for the Betfair meeting and then on to the International at Cheltenham - basically he'll have the same sort of programme as last season.

"He has had problems with his feet and he's not the most straightforward, but everything seems sorted and hopefully it's onwards and upwards."

The winning rider said: "He was a bit rusty today and I thought they'd have gone faster, especially with Rayvin Black and Mr Lando in the field.

"He was not flashy or impressive, but he never is and it is great to get him back out.

"He hadn't run since Cheltenham and there are lots of reasons to be positive, as he has only schooled twice since Cheltenham and it's just cemented in my mind that he has got over the problem from last year (kissing spine)."
