We look back on another thrilling weekend of top-class racing at Aintree, a weekend of drama and incredible storylines.

We have picked out his three eyecatchers from the meeting with a view to next season.

  • Boombawn

Dan Skelton's Boombawn produced a career-best performance when finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices' Chase. The eight-year-old son of Dylan Thomas was nibbled in the market late on, backed from 33/1 in to 22/1, and he ran an absolute corker when beaten just over three lengths behind Impaire Et Passe, Gidleigh Park and last month's Arkle winner, Jango Baie.

The four-time winner over hurdles has been a credit to connections and, although he only has two chase wins to his name thus far, one of those was the Grade 2 Rising Stars Novices' Chase at Wincanton in November, while he also finished runner-up in a Grade 2 at Kempton on his penultimate start in February.

It looked like Boombawn was going to play a serious part in the finish on his latest start. Held up in rear early on, he travelled best of all on the turn for home, but he had a slightly troubled passage in by the rail and had to switch a couple of times. He could have a big handicap in his next season and might even land a big prize, but he is best on good ground so keep that in mind.

    Caldwell Potter

Picked up for a staggering €740,000 when sold out of the Gordon Elliott stable, Caldwell Potter had been minded like a baby since he joined the Paul Nicholls team at Ditcheat and that patience is now paying dividends.

He is a difficult horse to train by all accounts but he bolted up from the front in the Grade 2 Jack Richards Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and proved it was no fluke when again making all in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree.

Arguably fortunate that Dancing City fell and then brought down Quai De Bourbon, nothing can be taken away from his performance and he looks a proper King George horse in the making. He might even go on to contest next year's Gold Cup.

    Three Card Brag

Yes, he finished 11th in the Grand National but I still feel that he's the big eyecatcher to take out of the race with a look to the future. Three Card Brag was far too keen for his own good and he paid the price late on.

Gordon Elliott's runner was lit up with the summer sun on his back and he also has a preference for testing conditions, so the quick ground might not have helped, but he raced with so much enthusiasm for three quarters of the race.

Fourth in the Albert Bartlett a couple of years ago, he's still a relatively young chaser and he could land a big pot in Ireland next season. He looks well handicapped, that's for sure.
