Topham jockeys handed bans 25 of the 29 jockeys who rode in the John Smith's Topham Chase at Aintree received one-day bans for not obeying the starter. There were two false starts before the race, won by Triolo D'Alene, and the only riders to escape censure were Liam Treadwell, who by the time of the enquiry was in hospital having X-rays, Tom O'Brien, Ruby Walsh and Brian Harding. Following a false start on Thursday in the John Smith's Fox Hunters, the BHA reacted angrily to Friday's incident. Jamie Stier, Director of Raceday Operations and Regulation, said: "We are very disappointed with the starts to each of the two races run over the Grand National course over the last two days. "Ahead of Saturday's Grand National all riders will be expected to respect the importance of the start of the race and approach it in a much more appropriate manner."
