UCD pays tribute to Dermot Weld

University College Dublin will hold a special event on Tuesday 19th April at their Belfield campus to honour the achievements of Dermot Weld.

Dermot Weld (MVB 1970) will return to his Alma Mater, to take part in the popular alumni event series ‘Characters in Conversation’ with guest interviewer Tracy Piggott. Weld studied veterinary medicine at UCD, qualifying in 1970.

Dermot Weld has saddled big-race winners across four continents, including all five Irish Classics as well as the Ascot Gold Cup, Dubai International Racing Carnival, Hong Kong Mile and the American Derby. Weld has also won the prestigious Melbourne Cup on two occasions.

UCD Vice-President for Development, Aine Gibbons says: “Dermot Weld is one of horse racing’s greatest legends and a superb ambassador for Ireland. We are delighted to welcome him back for an evening that will undoubtedly be an insightful and entertaining glimpse into his illustrious career as well as the world of horse racing”.

Guest interviewer, Tracy Piggott will explore Dermot’s memories of his time spent at UCD and how his career path developed after leaving University. As one of RTE’s frontline sports commentators and a regular contributor to RTÉ's Sports Stadium and Sunday Sport, as well as being the daughter of champion jockey, Lester Piggott makes Tracy an ideal candidate to interview Dermot Weld.

The Characters in Conversation event series is designed to bring UCD alumni together in an informal setting on campus. UCD Vice-President for Development, Aine Gibbons, stated: “The upcoming Characters in Conversation with Dermot Weld and Tracy Piggott promises to be a highly enjoyable evening and is ideal for anyone with an interest in sports or horse racing. Characters in Conversation is an extremely popular and important alumni event helping us establish the ties that bind and foster a lifelong spirit of involvement with the university amongst our graduates.”
