The world’s best golfers are set to descend on Oakmont Country Club, a course that has long separated the contenders from the pretenders, for this week’s 125th US Open.

Scottie Scheffler arrives as the hottest player in golf after clinching the US PGA Championship last month, one of three wins in his last four starts.

But with Oakmont’s punishing rough and lightning-fast greens capable of taking their toll on even the most consistent players, there’s value to be found beyond the outright favourite.

  • Scheffler can shoot out of the traps

Scheffler is the clear market leader and it’s easy to see why. The world number one arrives with stunning form figures of 1-1-4-1 and romped to victory at Quail Hollow last month to clinch his third Major title by five strokes.

Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee-to-green and has shown the patience and precision required to thrive at Oakmont, where par is always a good score.

He’s the man to beat and, given his current form, looks a worthy favourite, but few will be in a rush to back him at his skinny outright price.

However, there is an angle to bolster Scheffler’s odds based on the American’s usual mode of victory.

The 28-year-old is a great frontrunner and has rarely been pegged back in Majors once his name has reached the top of the leaderboard.

He has been the outright leader or tied for the lead at the halfway mark in two of his three Major wins and hit the front after three rounds of the other.

That was only last month and came hard on the heels of a wire-to-wire win at the CJ Cup when he opened with rounds of 61 and 63.

Morikawa has momentum and major pedigree

Collin Morikawa, available at 22/1 with Boyelsports, is quietly building momentum heading into Oakmont.

The two-time Major winner has rediscovered his iron play, which is still among the best in the world, and has three top-10s in his last five starts.

Morikawa’s ability to find fairways and greens will be a huge asset on a course that punishes wayward shots.

It is possible to reduce the risk on backing the 28-year-old while still netting great odds, by siding with him in the betting without the four favourites market.

That takes out the in-form duo of Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau plus Masters winner Rory McIlroy and the consistent Jon Rahm, who may be due another Major.

Like them, Morikawa’s already proven he can handle the pressure of Sunday at a Major and looks primed for another big week.

    Order a full English

Harris English has flown under the radar but the 35-year-old remains one of the most dependable performers in Major championships.

He has made five straight cuts and notched some impressive results, including a T12 at this year’s Masters and second place at the recent US PGA Championship.

Earlier this year, he captured the Farmers Insurance Open title at Torrey Pines South, underlining his ability to win on demanding layouts.

English’s US Open record is particularly eye-catching, with finishes of third, fourth, and eighth in the last five editions, a testament to his consistency and resilience in golf’s toughest test.
