Quail Hollow in North Carolina hosts the second golf major of the year, the PGA Championship, which get underway tomorrow with Rory McIlroy the favourite after finally completing a career Grand Slam at Augusta earlier this year.

We caught up with AK Bets' chief, Anthony Kaminskas, ahead of the tournament. He explained his process for the majors and why he is not backing McIlroy to experience success at Quail Hollow again.

Fancy a bet on the PGA Championship with AK Bets

  • Will you be wearing your punters' or bookmakers' hat when it comes to McIlroy this week? You tipped him to win the Masters!

"I did tip McIlroy to win the US Masters but AK Bets still managed to lose £173,000 on the event, mainly due to our standout best prices on Golf which have become a bit of a staple of the firm, much to the delight of our customers.

"We're at it again this week and have been knocked over for our top price 5/1 on McIlroy. I don't actually fancy him this week and would fancy Scheffler to beat him in a match.

"We offer McIlroy to beat Scheffler at Evens if you disagree.

"The two big losers in our book are McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. We are happy to lay McIlroy but are less happy with our liabilities on DeChambeau. However, being best priced for pretty much every golfer means we can lay players we actually fancy."

  • Which is more important to you when betting on a major tournament like this, previous course form, current form or a proven record in Majors?

"I'd have the order of importance exactly as listed in the question. Course form and recent form are fairly important and it's up to us as punters to get that analysis right.

"Everything has to be brought back to the prices on offer. For example, McIlroy obviously loves Quail Hollow, but at 5/1 he's not a bet for me.

"A proven record in Majors as an individual factor is fairly irrelevant in my opinion, as it's too broad of a topic.

"Of the market principles, I'd be against Justin Thomas, Ludvig Aberg and Brooks Koepka. I like Scheffler, Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth this week."

How lopsided is your book on events like this? Do punters tend to bet on just the big names or is there a good spread with punters looking for value with extra places?

"At AK Bets we have a 5-place market with massive prices and this is very popular with our customers. The market principles often dominate as our prices are unbeatable elsewhere.

"In the 10-place market we offer, the spread of bets is much larger but when both markets are combined, we're often hoping the market principles get beaten.

"That's probably why we're doing our brains on Majors of late with McIlroy, Scheffler, Schauffele and DeChambeau sharing the last 5."
