Zeus Power followed up a Thurles maiden win last month when putting up a gutsy performance to take the opening Race Displays Rated Novice Hurdle at Navan.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained son of Protectionist appeared to have an uphill task in third place at the final flight but found plenty on the climb to the line.

The 6/1 shot stayed on gamely up the inner for JJ Slevin to peg back the odds-on Lazare De Star in the closing stages and score by three-quarters of a length. Welonlyhavedone couldn’t find any extra on the run-in, a further three and a half lengths back in third.

Slevin said, “Richie Deegan was unfortunately injured, so we better not forget him. A good performance.

"He won very well the last day. I heard Gordon (Elliott) speaking yesterday and he was confident about his lad (Lazare De Star), and I don't know where we are going to end up, but he has been good his last two runs.

"I think so (progressing) - he coped with the ground. It is dead oul' ground and he feels like he might go up in trip too, so he is a grand horse."
