An eye-catching and controversial sixth on his first start over fences at Clonmel in February, it'll be interesting to see how MOUNT FERNS fares. His trainer and rider, Eric and Conor McNamara, were hit with a hefty fine and ban at Powerstown Park, with both found to have 'deliberately or recklessly caused or permitted a horse to run other than on its merits'. However, the excessive penalties were successfully overturned on appeal. A winner over flights at Listowel in September, the seven-year-old bay should be well capable of making an impact in a contest of this quality. Successful in point-to-point on debut and ultimately disappointing since, Elusive Prince is of interest switching to the larger obstacles, while Limerick victor Midnight Eagle and the returning Inchidaly Copper are others for the shortlist.
