Formscan By Michael Graham - SAINTE LUCIE doubled her total over flights when stretching clear to win a valuable handicap hurdle at Cork over Easter. She has certainly been keeping good company and was beaten just over five lengths when seventh in the Martin Pipe on her penultimate start at the Cheltenham Festival. Break My Soul is the highest rated in the field on a mark of 137 and gets first-time cheekpieces. She has been extensively chasing since finishing a remote fourth in the Champion Hurdle at Punchestown last year and has to bounce back from being pulled up at Fairyhouse, but that is feasible in this small field. Royal Hollow is a talented sort who should be well in the mix for a healthy cheque.

Keith was happy with her, and it was straightforward. She was ready to start today, and I was confident she would win. Last year we were only killing time over hurdles. I wanted to go for a chase straight away and luckily enough Keith talked sense into me and said to keep her for this season. She got black type here in the Red Mills (Hurdle, finishing second) and I’d say she just didn’t stay the 2m4f at Aintree. We’ll look at those graded mares’ races and won’t be afraid to go against the geldings as well. We’ll try and stay to two miles and she’s definitely the best one we’ve ever had.

It looked like she ran flat the last day in Navan and has ran 18 times this year, so the brother said to me this morning 'what are you going to Thurles with her for!'. We had planned to give her a break, and only for it being so near on nice ground that we decided to take our chance. Maybe racing on the Flat is buzzing her. Sean said she was keen today but she has one thing - guts. She is tough out and when you have that you always have a chance. She goes up the gallop on her own and is a nut job at home. My young lad Jack is really training her as no one else wants the hardship of riding her. Jack is well able to ride but unfortunately is too tall to ride on the track.

I’d say she had too much of it at Killarney when she never rose a gallop but is back to herself now. She has been working well so we were expecting a good run and we’re delighted. Farrier Dan Breen, who bred her, heads the syndicate and the lads are all local. Dan bred some good horses including Maries Rock and this mare has a good pedigree too, so I’d say he’ll breed off her in time. There is a race for her at the November meeting in Cheltenham so should go for that, although she wouldn’t want the ground any softer that today.

She’s a bit mad! She ran too free in Listowel the last day and ran too free in Clonmel before that and in the Galway Hurdle she didn’t jump off,. I wanted to run her in the Irish Cesarewitch last week and he wouldn’t let me but now I want to run her in the Colm White Handicap at Naas (on October 12th). She has loads of ability, she’s very talented. If she puts it all together she’s capable of winning one of those. She did too much in the visor the last day and run herself into the ground. She’s fully mad and we just have to try and keep a lid on her. She ran well in the Tipperary Cup in Clonmel but she pulled for a mile-and-six, she was still pulling turning into the straight and still finished fourth. She’s not learning. We’ll go to Naas now.
