McDonogh swoops from off the pace on Victoria
A pair of Kings trump rivals at Listowel
Harrington had Storm Ready for debut win
He is a nice horse who had a great prep from Jim Ryan, who takes care of John Kirkland’s horses, and will only go on improving,.
Dragon Of Malta strikes again at Listowel
The last few times this horse won I was at the sales, but Kia Joorabchian (high-profile international owner) hasn't asked me to go to Tattersalls this time! . What can you say about this horse, but he is older so that gave us a bit of confidence at this trip. We had tried him over 1m2f as a three-year-old and it was quite obvious he didn't stay, but that is a long time ago and the track suits him here. He didn't break as sharp as he usually does, but I thought Julian did very well to get his position, without burning too much gas. Once he got the position, I watched it with confidence. He is in again tomorrow and has to come, unless something untoward happens, which I don't expect, so we're looking forward to it.
Duke lays down the Law at Listowel
Canon Law is improving all the time, which is absolutely great, and we are very excited by him. He keeps turning up, although I thought he didn’t deserve to be penalised (12lb) for running his heart out in a Galway apprentice race on heavy ground the last day: I thought that was a bit OTT. He is as genuine as gold and you won’t see the best of him until he jumps hurdles. He has no hang-ups, doesn’t need any counselling or anything. He lives a quiet life, comes to the races and thank God for him.
Premier Handicap success for Handani, Hayes & Weld
The Austrian is another for Harrington & Foley
He is a nice horse, and the penny only dropped with him late on at the Curragh the last day,. He was still a bit green today, but travelled better through the race, although the track probably didn't suit him. Hopefully he will step up into Listed company, and he is one for next year.
Lauderdale King an improving stayer for the Slatterys
He is a grand horse and is a big four-year-old. I was a bit afraid of the ground drying out, as he wants soft ground,. He gave him a lovely ride, kept it simple and he enjoyed it. I'll run him again on soft ground up until the end of the Flat season, and then give him a break for the winter. I was going to run him over hurdles earlier in the year, but he'll make a lovely novice hurdler next summer. He is owned by brothers-in-law Pat Morrissey and Rory Brennan, from Thurles, and they also have Parnell Street with me.
