Return to winning ways for Vanillier
it’s great to see Vanillier back winning again as I thought he’d lost his way a bit. Just recently for whatever reason he’s really sharpened up and blinkers were a help today. He’s entered in the National and we have the option of the Cross Country in Cheltenham, but I don’t know exactly where we’re going to go. I’m delighted that he’s back motoring again and he enjoyed it. He’s on a mark that he might not get into the National, but this run today might help. The fact that he’s in form and has Aintree form too, he (the handicapper) might give him a little bit more.
Conquering Cromwell sets new seasonal best
that’s winner number 73, so it’s my best ever season: we had 72 last year.
Diamond delivers for dominant Mullins & Townend
it looked an ideal opportunity for Ethical Diamond: he got a freebee in front and jumped well. Paul (Townend) said he’s learning the whole time jumping-wise: that was a bit of an issue for him last year, so he seems to be enjoying it a bit more. Hopefully he can build on it. Better ground would definitely help him, but Paul said it’s not as bad as you would think.
'Lovely Jubbly!' - Drusilla wins for Del Boy Partners
she didn’t help herself with her jumping, but Tiernan gave her a great ride. She’s a really honest filly and I think the only two hurdles she jumped were the last two when the pressure was on her. Maybe she was a bit flat after her run eight days — that was our worry today. We wouldn’t have run her again so quick only she was well treated by the conditions and was getting plenty of weight (carrying 10st2lb). Probably further might suit her as well. She’s owned by a great bunch of lads and they get great craic out of her. I don’t think she’d get into a Fred Winter but if she did we’d go.
Power Roche completes Punchestown double
he received a 9lb penalty for winning the last day and Tiernan obviously lost 2lb of his claim since, so I associated that as 11lb. We decided to drop him in today and I think they got racing too early, which really suited us, and Tiernan gave him a cool ride.
Townend wins again for owners of Galopin
Argento Boy was disappointing at Christmas but obviously a reproduction of his previous run here would have done. We don’t know why he disappointed at Christmas; he just never ran his race. Paul said he felt much better through the race today, and the further he was going the better he was getting. Paul felt he lacks a bit of concentration over his hurdles, and he should make a nice three-mile chaser next year.
Lucky Viv scores for Shinnick and Barry
I didn’t think the ground would suit her at all, so I was a bit surprised. I thought it might be too tacky for her, but she seemed to stay the trip well. She ran in a few point-to-points, and we might go over fences with her.
