Bibe Mus makes winning start to hurdling career
He is a nice horse who ran well for us the first day in Galway but we were a little disappointed with him the second day at Killarney. He had done a good bit of schooling with JJ (Slevin) in the last few weeks, which he liked , and JJ was very sweet on him, as he also jumped a lot of hurdles on Tuesday. We had a bit of luck with Whats New running-out but Gordon's horse (Elliott, Combs) had a run under his belt. Our horse handles the ground, enjoys jumping and hopefully can keep going forward. It makes sense to go for the winners' race in Down Royal in three weeks next. It is great to get a winner for Simon and Isaac and it is my first horse for them. I got a random phone call from Simon last autumn, which I couldn't believe, to say that something might be coming along. He came to see my place and then the horses arrived. I also have a younger horse for them and it is lovely to get a nice horse, which you appreciate. It is lovely to get these colours in the yard and getting the quality of horse is what you need.
Daydream Nation makes impressive winning debut under Rules
We really liked him and with the race cutting up since declarations, we were confident. He was impressive in his point to point for Colin Bowe and Rory Breen, who is now involved in him, picked him out. There are a good group involved, including my mam. We'll see what the programme says although he wants nice ground and has the option of running in the UK.
Breakthrough success for Doyle's Star
Jerisk Star has had horrendous palate issues and he literally couldn’t breathe. A huge thank you to vet Hugh Dillon, at the Curragh, who mixed an old procedure with a new one and it seems to have helped him a bit anyway. Hugh is a ‘wind nerd’ and tricked around with a few things. It is has worked to a certain extent and I’m pleased to have some semblance of my good horse back. He had a good first run but struggled with his palate then, which is the bane of every trainer’s life unfortunately. I might go chasing with him pretty soon but we’ll see. It is just satisfying to get today out of the way for the work and effort you put into them. It is a family-owned horse and are the colours of my late Dad, before my mother (retired M.E.P. Avril Doyle) took them over, so it is a nice day.
Ag Obair Go Crua lands gamble for Flavin at Gowran Park
He was the runner I really fancied today as my others probably needed their runs. Darragh being on board is worth an extra stone and he is an unbelievable rider, and especially on this type of horse. We have had him a while so I'm delighted to get his head in front. He likes ease in the ground. The main man David Whittey in the syndicate is from Waterford and he got a few of his friends together. The horse hadn't been straightforward so the lads had to be patient but thankfully it has all worked out.
Western Fold wins PWC Champion Chase at Gowran Park
He is a good horse, was rated 157 today and is still a novice for the year. He could head to Down Royal for the Champion Chase or we could keep him for the Drinmore (novice). He loves jumping and Danny gets a good tune out of him. I was going to put Jack (Kennedy, stable jockey) on him but come Down Royal and the Drinmore, Jack will have other horses to ride so I kept the combination together. We brought him to Ayr one day when he lost his confidence but is back going the right way now. He didn't win until Tipperary in May so is a novice for the whole season, and I don't know if there are as many novices with the experience that he has. We have loads of options but I was nervous about meeting deep ground here today but when we came here, I was happy to run.
Boston Rover brings up quick Gowran Park double for Elliott
He is a nice horse, is going the right way and we are learning about him the whole time. When he gets to the front, he just does what he has to do but Jack was good on him and just went through the motions until going down to the last. He said he won snugly at the line and I'd say he will handle softer ground. Derek (Barry, owner) is from Straffan and trained but said he got to the stage where he couldn't get staff to ride the horses. He sent us down a couple of horses and is a big supporter of the yard, so it is great to see him get winners.
Taponthego gives O'Keeffe a brace at Gowran
We always hoped he would be a good chaser and he jumped really well today. He looks a good one and you'd hope he will stay further, but we'll see what's coming up. He will come on plenty for the run. Colin Motherway recommended him and in fairness he really pushed me to buy him, so all credit to him. I'm delighted for the lads (Both Sides Of The Water Syndicate) who have been great supporters of ours over the years and we've had plenty of fun together.
