'Eye-catching headway' - Emerging Gavin Cromwell stars Few trainers have continued to develop at the rapid rate that Gavin Cromwell has in recent years and he has firmly established himself at the top table in Ireland’s National Hunt scene. His versatility helps him to stand out and he’s now a Gold Cup-winning trainer too. Inothewayurthinkin’s defeat of Galopin Des Champs at Cheltenham in March was the biggest success of his training career and there will surely be plenty more to come. Cromwell has had a slow start to the campaign but there’s still plenty of time. Here we take a look at three Cromwell horses who could develop into smart performers across the season and they include an exciting juvenile hurdler, who won on her debut. Will The Wise Will The Wise has been progressive over fences this season and he won a Galway novice by just shy of three lengths in October. Making all the running, he went clear at the third last and would have won by further if not for a couple of sketchy jumps at the last two fences. A step up in grade was next on the agenda and he kept on to finish fourth in the Troytown. That was a thoroughly competitive race and he could be one to watch in staying handicap chases at the major festivals in the spring. The National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham could be another viable option, as the way he kept on at Navan suggested that he possesses an abundance of stamina. We haven’t seen the best of him just yet and you can guarantee that there’s a plan in place. Only By Night Robcour’s Only By Night was a fair novice hurdler and even won a Listed bumper before that but she has taken her form to the next level since going over fences. A Grade 2 winner at Cork last season, she then launched a successful British raid at Exeter. Beaten only half a length in the Arkle at Cheltenham, she ran an absolute cracker to finish second and filled the same spot behind Majborough at Punchestown. She might struggle at the very top level but the seven-year-old is capable of winning some decent prizes. Cromwell’s mare began the season with a game success in the Grade 3 Barberstown Castle Chase and she got the better of a couple of Willie Mullins horses. Further progress can’t be ruled out and she’s definitely worth adding to your trackers. Coole Cafe Coole Cafe has a Flat pedigree for the most part but one of her dam’s half-siblings was a useful hurdler, winning over trips from 2m-2m5f. Cromwell tends to do well with juvenile hurdlers and this filly was victorious on her only start to date. She didn’t get the easiest passage through the race and was slightly hampered at halfway. That didn’t stop her however and she recovered quickly, making eye-catching headway. The race was over once she hit the front and the three-year-old saw out the trip well. Surely connections will be looking to step her up in grade next time and there are a couple of graded juvenile hurdles in Ireland and Britain over the Christmas period.
