Carleton makes long journey worthwhile Henry De Bromhead's decision to bring Carleton Place to Uttoxeter yesterday (his only runner on the card) paid off, as the Philip Enright ridden gelding ran out an easy winner of the Ladies at the Races Handicap Chase. The 8yo son of Beneficial in the colours of Herb Stanley had one victory to his name beforehand, having won a Handicap Chase at the Tramore Festival last August. He disappointed on his two efforts since, but bounced back here, leading from three out and never seeing another rival from there, running out a seven length winner at the finish at 4/1. Thirty five minutes earlier, in the feature race on the card the Britannia Summer National, there was disappointed for the sole Irish raider, The Last Derby (the other Irish trainer runner Gonebeyondrecall was a non-runner). Eoin Griffin's gelding was sent off at 8/1, having run well on his last three outings, when second to Mossey Joe at Cork, sixth in the Irish Grand National and finishing third in the Cork National last October. He never looked a winner here though, and weakened from the third last before eventually being pulled up before two out by his rider Eddie O’Connell. Knighton Combe ran out a surprise winner in the end at 16/1 for trainer Jamie Snowdon and Co Wexford rider Daryl Jacob.
