Danube to get things flowing for Bunyan

Darren Bunyan, so long associated with the Ken Condon operation, has branched out on his own and he sends out his initial runner from his Curragh base (beside Dessie Hughes) when Grey Danube contests the opening Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund (C & G) Maiden at Naas tomorrow evening.

This juvenile son of Verglas will be ridden by Chris Hayes and Bunyan commented of him: "He is not a bad horse and he should be able to win an auction maiden or a nursery. He will come on a lot for tomorrow but we are more than happy with him and he is ready for a run now."

Bunyan's father Arthur passed away seven years ago and he of course trained and Darren explained: "I grew up in racing and rode myself on the flat and over jumps and I had a few mounts placed. I was with Ken (Condon) since he started and I was with John Oxx and Dermot Weld as well and I spent time in Japan in between that.

"I have a dual purpose licence now and I'll be trying to build things up and I have a handful in at the moment – a couple of two-year-olds and an older horse. Grey Danube is owned by my brother Brian who is a financial expert in London.

"I got my licence the week before last and hopefully things will go well."

Coincidentally two of Bunyan's former employers are also represented in tomorrow's six furlong event with Dermot Weld fielding Haseen and Ken Condon Strait Of Zanzibar. (EM)
