Runner-up over course and distance two weeks ago, the Andy Slattery trained Faoladh went one better when opening his account in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic Handicap at Leopardstown.

Denied by a short head on his previous visit, the three-year-old was sent off 7/2 to gain compensation in this similar grade.

Smartly into stride under Andrew Slattery, the gelding chased leader Methgal coming through on the inside to lead entering the straight.

Strongly pressed by Everylittlestep inside the final furlong, the eventual winner stayed on well to score by half-a-length.

“He deserved it after the last day. He got a great ride the last day but just jinked when he hit the front and it probably cost him,” said Slattery Senior.

“The winner came out and won again since. I thought the three-year-olds had a bit of an advantage with the weight concession. It’s great to win a race with him.

“He likes being up there on a good pace and he likes good ground.

“We had owned him ourselves and the lads bought him off me at Christmas. They had a couple of good horses with me. They had An Saighdiur and Sunset Nova, who has retired. There were light on stock but they are back again now.

“This horse could go for the mile three-year-old handicap in Galway.”
