Share of spoils in group opener

Despite a number of the other groups being well underway, Saturday’s clash at the Aviva Stadium is the first World Cup qualifier for both Republic of Ireland and Hungary.

Group F also includes Portugal and Armenia, so the two fixtures between these two sides could be crucial for their hopes of qualification.

The hosts go into this clash unbeaten in their last four internationals and have lost just two of the last eight under Heimir Hallgrimsson.

Home form looks likely to be important for Ireland’s chances of reaching next summer’s tournament, as they look to build on a run of just three goals in their last nine in Dublin.

Hungary head to the Aviva Stadium having won just one of their last six matches, with that victory being a 3-1 away win at Azerbaijan in their most recent fixture.

Marco Rossi’s men qualified for the Euros last summer and are now looking to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

The Republic of Ireland are unbeaten in six meetings with Hungary, with three of those six matches finishing in a share of the spoils.

  • Idah has fresh impetus

Goals have often been a problem for Ireland in recent years, but a more-attacking formation under Hallgrimsson has helped that situation.

One of those players benefiting from a change of ethos is Adam Idah, who has five international goals to his name.

The former Norwich man’s last goal for his country was in March, when he scored a late winner at home to Bulgaria.

Idah has recently moved clubs, leaving Celtic to join Championship outfit Swansea, and that transfer-deadline domestic change might also give him a lift on the international stage.

    Szoboszlai pressure to deliver

It’s worth noting that both teams have scored in three of the Republic of Ireland’s last four matches, while three of the last five Hungary matches have seen both teams score.

The last meeting between these two teams was a friendly back in June 2024, when Ireland ran out 2-1 winners.

Dominic Szoboszlai has enjoyed a fine start to the season with Liverpool, playing mainly in an unfamiliar right-back role.

The 24-year-old though will be asked to try and dictate matters in the middle of the park for his country and with that comes extra responsibility.

Szoboszlai, who has scored two of his country’s last three goals, was yellow carded in the last meeting between the teams.

There have been eight goals in Ireland’s last four internationals, with five of those coming in the first half. Of the last eight strikes in Hungary’s last three fixtures, five of them have also come before the break.
