Hallgrimsson's side to build on luck of the Irish

Saturday's Group F opener at home to Hungary came perilously close to ending in disaster for Republic of Ireland.

They were two goals down before the midpoint of the first half and had goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to thank that it wasn't any worse.

Evan Ferguson got them back in the contest after the break and then a silly challenge from Roland Sallai left the Hungarians to play most of the second half a man light after his red card.

Ireland piled on the pressure but it required a stoppage-time header from sub Adam Idah to ensure a share of the spoils.

In a section that also includes Portugal, avoiding defeat to Hungary was crucial for the Irish.

Equally, now taking care of Armenia is next. If Saturday's game could be classed as 'must not lose', then this trip to Yerevan is very much in the 'must win' category.

Under Heimir Hallgrimsson, the Irish have lost only two of their last nine games.

Armenia shipped five at home to Portugal on Saturday. Including friendlies against Kosovo and Montenegro in June, they have conceded an alarming 21 goals in five games since March, shipping at least three in four of those games.

They are ranked outside the world's top 100 and Ireland (60th) should be good enough to get a comfortable win after their opening game in this group ended on a high note.

Ferguson to make the breakthrough

The early promise shown by Ferguson in the Premier League has dissipated and he has joined Roma on a season-long loan deal. It's easy to forget that he won't celebrate his 21st birthday until the middle of next month.

He notched a couple of goals in preseason for Roma and has looked sharp without scoring as he started their opening two Serie A games.

He showed agility, composure and a good eye for goal to get Ireland going against Hungary when it was badly needed, swivelling and finishing from close range.

That made it three goals in his last five competitive caps for Ireland and he could be set for more goalscoring joy in Yerevan.

Collins offers aerial threat

Nathan Collins almost scored a stoppage-time header to win the game for Ireland on Saturday, finding himself free in the box but unable to hit the target.

The defender was having his third headed goal attempt of the evening and set-pieces could be key for the Irish again now. The Brentford defender is a major threat and could find the target this time.

Ireland's defence was questionable in the first half on Saturday and Armenia will know they can get at the visitors.

Prior to their humbling by Portugal, Armenia had scored five goals in three games. Two of the last three meetings of these nations have seen both teams scoring and Ireland were 3-2 winners in the most recent clash. The Boys in Green may need multiple goals to win.

There were only five corners in Ireland's draw with Hungary and six as Armenia lost to Portugal. This contest may not reach double figures for flag-kicks.
